Children's interior design is all about creating spaces that are safe, functional, imaginative and adaptable as they grow. The best children's rooms balance playfulness with practicality. Your child's room plays a huge part in their growth, well being and daily life. A well designed room can stimulate creativity, imagination and learning through colour and interactive spaces. Not only that but safety gives parents piece of mind while giving children the freedom to explore. Keep reading these 5 interior design ideas for children's bedrooms to learn about the balance between aesthetics and practicality.

1 - Colour Themes

Colour influences children's mood and development. Soft pastels (light blue, green and lavender) can calm and soothe young children. However colours like bright yellow, orange and greens can stimulate creativity and play. Kids rooms take a beating, Farrow and Balls Modern Emulsion finish is wipeable, scrubbable and designed for high traffic areas. From washable mattes, to hard wearing gloss, you can pick a finish that keeps the whole room cohesive and practical. A very popular trend at the moment is neutral colours. Painting walls in cream or greys. A neutral wall colour makes it easy to refresh the room with swappable bedding, rugs and décor as the child interests change.

Here are some of our Farrow and Ball favourites for children's bedrooms:

  • No. 309 Whirlybird and No. 19 Lichen

  • No. 230 Calamine and No. 231 Setting Plaster

  • No. 89 Lulworth Blue and No. 27 Parma Gray

  • No. 37 Hay and No. 68 Dorset Cream

2 - Textures and Comforts

Children don't just sleep in their rooms, they play, learn, relax and grow in that space. The way the room feels can be just as important as it looks. Its important to create a sense of security. You can achieve this by using soft rugs, cushions and blankets to make the room feel cosy and safe. Comforting textures like plush, cotton or fleece give children a place to retreat and relax and are often stain resistant, washable or wipeable which is essential when your dealing with food paint or muddy hands. Some ways to include texture and comfort into your child's room:

  • Having a soft, high pile carpet, providing comfort and warmth underfoot.

  • Faux fur throws and patterned blankets and cushions on the bed.

  • A big wool rug that adds extra comfort to the room, but also helps protect the carpet or flooring underneath.

3 - Practical Flooring

Flooring makes a huge difference in a child's bedroom because it affects the safety, comfort, durability, and ease of cleaning. Unlike adults, children spend a lot of time on the floor, crawling, playing, reading and even napping. So what's underfoot matters a lot. A safe and comfortable floor gives your child the freedom to spread out toys, read, draw or build. It becomes an active part of their play zone. A floor chosen properly can last them from toddler years up until teenagers. Some examples of our flooring we offer:

  • Carpet - Soft, cushioned and noise reducing. A natural and comforting one we would recommend would be the Wool twist or wool loop. Some wool carpets will be made from a mix of 80% wool and 20% man-made fibre, this gives the best wear and durability, perfect for a child's room. Our wool carpets can also include a stain resistant, to help protect itself from any spillages or damage. Even choose a herringbone pattern for extra character.

  • LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tile)- It is extremely durable, water resistant, scratch resistant, and easy to clean. It is softer and warmer than tile or hardwood and copes well in high traffic areas and can last 10 to 20 years if it is looked after. However it doesn't provide the soft and comforting finish that carpet does. You can always cover your LVT with one of our Bound Rugs to give it that softer feel.

  • Laminate Flooring - It is affordable, durable and easy to clean. With it being resistant to scratching and stains, it makes it a great option to have in your child's room. Like LVT it can be softened by having a wool rug placed over the top of it, also helping with the wear and protection of the laminate.

4 - Rugs

Rugs are a great detail to add to your child's room. They are not just decoration, they bring safety, comfort and function into the space. Rugs make the floors softer and warmer, perfect since kids spend a lot of time sitting, crawling and playing on the ground. A cosy rug creates an inviting space for reading, games or quiet time. They also provide cushioning for tumbles and falls, especially important for toddlers. They can also reduce the risk of slipping on hard surfaces like wood or laminate. Rugs are an affordable way to refresh your child's room as they grow. You can swap in new colours or patterns without redecorating the whole room.

Here at Floor Design Wetherby we allow our customers to design their own rugs. To do this you choose your carpet from our huge range. Then you choose your binding to have around the edge, choose from many different colours. You can also opt for a whipped or hemmed

edge depending on your preference. We also have pre-fabricated options in store.

5 - Design and Décor

o

The design and décor of a child's room isn't about making it look nice, it plays and important role in their development and also practicality. Things like colour, pattern and textures influence mood and feelings, but making sure to choose ones that are durable and suitable.

Encourages Play and Creativity - Fun décor (murals, themed bedding, playful furniture) sparks imagination. Design elements like chalkboard walls, art displays or cosy reading nooks inspires creativity and self expression.

Flexibility as they grow - Practical décor tends to be timeless and adaptable. Neutral walls, versatile storage and multi purpose furniture (like a bed with drawers) can evolve with the child instead of needing a full redesign every few years.

Improves Sleep and Relaxation - A well designed and uncluttered room supports healthy sleep routines. Choices like blackout curtains, warm lighting and soft textiles create a restful environment.

Designing your child's room helps to create a space that is safe, functional and inspiring. Shaping not only how a child uses the room but also how they feel and grow in it. It is important to have an area that is practical and durable, but still in keeping with the aesthetics and design of the room. However, it goes far beyond decoration, its about creating a space that helps them thrive.
